Changing Driver Behaviours

For those of you who did not recieve our October newletter (We were advised that some did not go out)

Driver Safety Services supported Workcover in Tasmania safety month by presenting presenting seminars across the state in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart.

In the seminars we looked at driver behaviours as the main contributing factors in motor vehicle crashes.

Background - On average, four people are killed and 90 are seriously injured every week on Australia's roads. Almost everyone has, at some stage, been affected by a road crash. Driving behaviour is a contributing factor in at least 95% of crashes as driving is a self-regulated task. The Cost to business was estimated at $112m (09/10), and 1 in 4 fleet vehicles are damaged in a vehicle accident, each year.

Solution - The change in behaviour has to be significant because, considering the numbers of vehicles and kilometres travelled, crashes are still rare events and it is critical that any behavioural change overcomes the low risk perceptions that many drivers possess.

Behaviour can be changed with two approaches:

  • Manipulating a person’s environment by rewarding good behaviour and demonstrating discomfort from bad behaviour.

  • Generating change from within, that is, a person discovers a need for change and then uses the power of their enquiring mind to bring about change.
